The Circus Came to Town!

Standard

When was the last time you went to the circus?  For me it had been years until last night when we attended the opening night of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus called Dragons.  2012 is the year of the Dragon, and the theme was carried throughout the show.  It was an exciting night from the start.  I went with my husband and daughter and she brought along her friend.  We met other friends at the circus which added to the fun!

Before the show there was an animal expo that featured many of the animals that were to perform that night.  It was nice to get up close to the elephants, horses, and especially see the lions and tigers playing in their pens.

The show was very entertaining and featured numerous daring acts.  There was always so much action it was hard to decide what to look at next!  There were motorcycles on the tightrope and men that were launched high into the air using flexible balance beams.  The girls did not disappoint either.  They performed some amazing stunts in clear plastic bubbles hanging high above the circus floor.  I was impressed with the caliber of performance and the amount of people involved in putting on such a spectacular show.

My daughter and her friend really enjoyed watching the horse riding tricks and the acrobats that were able to jump through flaming hoops!  It was a great show and something the whole family will enjoy.

Working together, Oscar’s chimpanzee family—including his mom, Isha, and the group’s savvy leader, Freddy — navigates the complex territory of the forest.  The world is a playground for little Oscar and his fellow young chimps, who’d rather make mayhem than join their parents for an afternoon nap. Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas

Standard

On the fourth day of our cruise we stopped at Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas.

This is a small private island that is part of the Berry Island chain.  This particular island is owned and operated by Norwegian Cruise Line and used as a beach retreat for the onboard guests.

When you are sailing on a busy week it can take about an hour to wait for the tender and make the short boat trip from the cruise ship to the island.  This could be minimized if the staff provided better direction and more places to wait on the ship.  GET OFF THE BOAT EARLY!!!!  This is the key to enjoying the day at Great Stirrup Cay.  There are not enough lounge chairs for all, and they fill up FAST!  Get their early and stake your ground.  I found this to be a little annoying and the beach was very overcrowded.  They offer a buffet from 11:30-2 while you are on the island and there is ample food and space at the buffet.  Overall it is a nice day, but very crowded.

We also went on an excursion while we were here.  We did the one hour Eco Adventure Boat tour.  It was a lot of fun and very informative. The captain brought a sea cucumber on board for us to see:

We were able to fish sea stars out of the ocean and hold them.  We saw sting rays swimming by the boat and we were also able to hold a blue crab and conch shell.

The tour was reasonable: $39 per adult $29 per child.  I would highly recommend it and it is nice to go do something for awhile to get away from the crowds at the beach.

The captain even let her drive the boat!!

Norwegian Jewel-Sailing Away and Days at Sea

Standard

Saturday Feb. 18-At Sea

We sailed away from Manhattan at 4pm on Feb. 18th.  It was such a fun way to begin the trip.  Living in NY, it was very convenient to drive to the port and hop on the boat without having to hassle with airports and flights.

The sailing away party was held in the Spinniker Lounge on deck 13 and it was a great party. Drinks for the adults and dancing and games for the kids.  We watched as we sailed by the Statue of Liberty and enjoyed watching the city sail by.

That evening we all went for our first restaurant experience on the boat.  We ate at Teppanyaki, which is the hibachi restaurant.  $20pp for the adults (usually 25 but certain nights there are discounts at the restaurants, inquire with the reservations desk when you board)  and $12.50 for children ordering from the specialty menu. This restaurant is great, but extremely small and fills up FAST!!

I suggest deciding when you will want to eat here and make your reservations upon arrival to the boat.  I made my whole week’s reservations when we boarded to avoid being closed out of any restaurant.  Dinner was delicious and the chef was entertaining and very friendly.

After dinner we went to the 9:30 show, which was a sampling of all the acts to come during the week.  I have cruised a lot, and the caliber of performers on this ship were well above others I have sailed.  Each night we were impressed with the show.

 Sunday Feb 19-At Sea

Our day Sunday was a lazy one.  Waking up late and eating in the buffet on deck 12.  Upon entering the girls will spray you with sanitizer, which was one of the catch phrased on the boat, “Washy, Washy”  The buffet is extensive and food is great.  There is usually limited seating available during the busy breakfast time, and you can find additional seating in the restaurant called Mama’s across the ship.  This was a little known fact, and there was always ample window seating in there.

We spent the afternoon at the pool.  It was cold out, but the pools are kept at a warm 85 degrees and the hot tubs were available too.

We spent the day relaxing, you can use the spa, and there were a number of activities going on on board.

We used the kids club for the first time and Lauryn loved it!  They keep them busy with a lot of activities and it is really good for the little ones.  I think some of the 9-12 year olds, were not quite as happy because they are in the in between stage and some of the activities were a little babyish in their room.

That night we went to a great production show featuring songs from the 70′s.  Good music and great costumes and dancing and singing.

At the end of the night..you will always find some sort of towel animal back in your room.  Lauryn loved seeing what was there each night:)
